An Overcoat is for Winter, not just for Christmas
There are reassuringly few items in our wardrobes that are as indulgent perhaps, as the Overcoat. There are also few that are as indicative of their seasonal nature; rarely do we resurrect our Overcoats in the Summer, but plenty of us find an opportunity to wear three piece tweed Suits (just ask our Grooms). So why do we wait until the last moments of autumn to consider this key item of clothing?
Perhaps it is because Winters arrival here in Blighty is so unpredictable, that we regard it with some trepidation, verging on denial, and, ergo, get caught out by it. One thing is for sure: its arrival is not only inevitable but annual and our wardrobes should be ready for its onslaught. Because an Overcoat typically requires more cloth than its stablemate the Jacket it must be seen as an investment - one which can be managed by availing yourself of a BiT account. But you can be assured that any investment in good outerwear will reward you winter after winter after winter.
Thus far, on Brown in Town’s sartorial adventure, we have tackled the more formal Covert Coat and the utilitarian Field Jacket, but what we thought was missing in the Custom Collection was luxury. An Overcoat which would not only keep us warm, but provide a backdrop of elegance for your chosen Overcoating cloth: as with all Custom Collection garments, not only is the garment made using your own measurements, but your choice of cloth too.
Whether you opt for the timelessness of Herringbone in a grey woollen, plump for Tweed with a bold Check, or perhaps rely upon the luxury of Cashmere, what is certain is that the soft construction of our fully-canvassed Fatto-in-Italia Overcoat will create a enduring piece that commands one’s attention; a veritable gentleman’s pleasure, as opulent as it is functional - we opted for a virgin wool and mohair blend from Neapolitan cloth merchant Caccioppoli, whose brown slub-herringbone overcoating is a fantastical take on a classic.
And what better way to indulge in your desired cloth, selected from the finest British and Italian mills and merchants, than an overcoat which is Double Breasted, the foreparts of which overlap, so as to ensconce us in a comforting hug. Replete with broad Peak Lapels (each with a hand finished buttonhole), Straight-Flapped fleece-lined Hip Pockets for warmth and comfort, Single Vent and Belted at the back, a poachers pocket for your favourite read (ours is currently Monocle and WM Brown) and internal pockets for your sunglasses and phone/wallet, it takes its inspiration from a time when an Overcoat was designed to be worn over one’s Suit and when the generous cut of one’s jib was a mark of opulence – long before spray-on-suits, and overcoats worn in place of a jacket.
It is, therefore, an Overcoat which is simply timeless…
