“It was once said "never brown in town", the mild indiscretion of wearing one's tweed in the city or brown shoes with a navy blue suit; times change and along the way, so can sartorial advice.”

As the origins of our name might suggest, Brown in Town is no stranger to tweed. Whether in an urban, or indeed a rural setting, tweed has been a mainstay of Brown in Town since our inception.

Not that we discriminate against other cloths, far from it. Nor do we suggest that tweed is right for every occasion, or for everyone. But it does come in a cornucopia of shades and colours and colour is something that we like to make very good use of; particularly when dressing grooms for a wedding, for example, when finding the most flattering colour for the wearer is of the utmost importance - one that he will look good in 50 years from now if he plays his cards right, as well as on the big day.

Originally taking its inspiration from the rural landscape of the Scottish highlands, tweed has provided camouflage to shooters for centuries. Traditional tweed colours are plentiful but rarely contemporary. But, over the past few decades, long-established mills like Fox Brothers and Abraham Moon have pushed the boundaries, responding to a more cosmopolitan audience which is passionate about tweed’s functionality, its heritage and its myriad colour options; but who definitely prefer their tweed without the ‘twee’.

The majority of tweed Suits which Brown in Town have made over the years have had contemporary appeal; many being worn at weddings by urbanites, albeit often times, in a rural setting.

Fox Brothers’ new range of tweeds make marvellous use of colour; inspired by the Autumnal ‘shooting’ season, but woven in shades and patterns that are ultimately wearable.

Fox’s range of Gun Club checks (which purportedly takes its name from the American gun club which adopted the ubiquitous pattern as its own) makes use of the best of all these shades and is available in either in a two-tone, or the Gun Club holy grail, the three-tone. The latter makes a Jacket that is highly versatile – providing countless options for pairing with other key items in one’s wardrobe.

Tweed has suffered from many an unfortunate stereotype in the past: (think Bertie Wooster or Mr Toad) and Gun Club, has also been associated with the cads and bounders of the Ealing Comedies, or the American used-car salesman of the 1970s. Even the likes of Jim Rockford and Dirty Harry couldn’t quite blow away the association. But tweed has overcome some of the more cheesy periods of its history and is today the proud inspiration for our Gun Club jacket.

Made using Fox’ three-tone Gun Club incorporating a chocolate brown, grey and green check on a fawn colour 180z cloth. The handle of their tweeds is incredibly soft given its robust nature, which lends itself the soft-tailoring of our Fatto-in-Italia range of garments, which are described as deconstructed i.e. sans shoulder pads, lining etc. and replete with spalla camicia, barchetta-breast pocket and replete with patch pockets, double vent and a three-roll-two fastening which affords the wearer an additional insulative layer of security against the elements.

Depending on the colourway you opt for, tweed will provide the perfect camouflage in almost any environment; whether you’re strolling in the countryside, grabbing a coffee in Bristol’s Harbourside or sipping a Negroni al fresco!
